Get to know… STRAAT

At the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam you will find the graffiti and street art museum STRAAT. In the collection of STRAAT you will find 150 works by 130 different artists from all over the world.

The origin of graffiti

Graffiti has its origins in the 1970s. It started with painting subway cars and writing your name repeatedly. There were all rules to this. Eventually more and more artists distanced themselves from these rules in order to create their own style. The works of these artists grew bigger and eventually developed into large murals on the street. You can see this development life-size in the museum.

Five themes

The museum is divided into five themes: personal, aesthetic, connected, conscious and empathetic. The works from the museum’s collection are all grouped under one of these themes. Some pieces leave nothing to the imagination, while others are made to give the visitor an active interpretation of what the artist means. The artists have been inspired by the environment in which they find themselves. For example, life in large cities, social themes or everyday themes.

Are you interested in modern and contemporary art? Then you are at the right place at the Moco Museum in Amsterdam! The museum provides a platform for artists who look at contemporary society in an ironic way. It is also a boutique museum. This means that there is a lot of focus on the general public.

Collection

Big names such as Banksy and Andy Warhol can be seen in this museum. Warhol made Pop-Art, art for the ordinary person. That is exactly the idea behind the museum. Banksy makes a lot of art in public space. His art is thus very visible in everyday life. The Moco Museum owns a number of iconic works by Banksy that are worth seeing in person.

Location

The museum is in a very central location, namely on the Museumplein. The building in which the museum is located was designed by Eduard Cuypers in 1904. He was the cousin of Pierre Cuypers, the architect of, among others, the Rijksmuseum. The building, also called Villa Alsberg, is a stately mansion that is well maintained. The widow Cuypers lived in the house until 1939. After that, the building was owned by the Germans during the war. After the war it was mainly used by companies. In 2016, the Moco Museum took over the building. For an average museum, the Moco Museum in Villa Alsberg is on the small side, but that makes for a special museum experience.

The world’s largest museum dedicated to street art opened in Amsterdam on October 9th 2020. Over 150 works are exhibited in a huge warehouse. The museum owns work by big international names, but also gives the opportunity to young artists. The works from the current exhibition were created especially for STRAAT.

Location

STRAAT is located at the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam. This former ship shed is a national monument. This is of course the perfect location to exhibit street art and graffiti. The size and image of the shed give the art plenty of room to do justice.

Museum shop

In addition to a rich collection, the museum has an extensive museum shop. You will find exclusive products such as signed books, limited edition screen prints, toys and artistic souvenirs.

Of je nu nieuw bent in de kunst of een kenner, het Stedelijk heeft voor iedereen wat te bieden. Het is dé plek voor moderne en hedendaagse kunst en design, gelegen in het culturele hart van de stad: het Museumplein. Met een van de spraakmakendste kunstcollecties ter wereld, is het Stedelijk een echte must see voor iedereen die Amsterdam bezoekt. Je vindt er vernieuwende (inter)nationale kunstenaars als Vincent van Gogh, Piet Mondriaan, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Karel Appel, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons en Marlene Dumas. Ook het gebouw zelf is een spectaculaire blikvanger. Het monument uit 1895 is in 2012 uitgebreid met een indrukwekkende nieuwe vleugel die Amsterdammers liefkozend de ‘badkuip’ noemen.

DE COLLECTIE – STEDELIJK BASE
STEDELIJK BASE  is de vaste tentoonstelling met hoogtepunten uit de collectie van het Stedelijk. De tentoonstelling toont de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen in kunst en design van de afgelopen 150 jaar. Het is een perfecte eerste kennismaking met kunst en design of geeft je juist nieuwe perspectieven als je dieper in de kunst wil duiken. De presentatie toont bijna 700 kunstwerken en is een bonte en kleurrijke mix van onder andere schilderijen, meubels, sieraden en fotografie.

TENTOONSTELLINGEN
Het Stedelijk heeft een voortdurend wisselend aanbod van tentoonstellingen – van nieuw werk van opkomende jonge kunstenaars tot grote overzichtstentoonstellingen van all-time favorieten. Tot en met 11 juli biedt bijvoorbeeld Surinaamse School een boeiend inkijkje in wat er allemaal door Surinaamse kunstenaars is geproduceerd en tot en met 24 oktober geeft de Amerikaanse kunstenaar Bruce Nauman je een onvergetelijke ervaring. In het Nederlands Tegelmuseum (Dutch Tile Museum) five centuries of art, culture and history come together on a seemingly simple product: the tile. The Netherlands has an unique position in the history of tiles, tile pictures and ceramics. The Dutch Tile Museum displays the largest and most versatile collection of Dutch wall tiles and tile pictures in the world, from the late Middle Ages to contemporary ceramics.

From interior decoration to works of art

In the museum you will find impressive tile panels that have decorated palaces, churches, schools, shops and houses for centuries. From Dutch Renaissance to Baroque, from tiles in Art Nouveau and Art Deco style to works of art by Maurits Escher and Karel Appel, among others.

A Dutch classic

Not so long ago, handmade tiles were an everyday phenomenon in Dutch houses and buildings. Now that this image is increasingly disappearing, the Tile Museum ensures that this Dutch classic is not lost. The representations on tiles tell a lot about daily life and the changes in fashion then and now.

Helene Kröller-Müller room

The art collection that Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939) brought together for her museum is known all over the world. The fact that Helene also built up a collection of Delft pottery, containing a series of old Dutch wall tiles, is much less known. This collection was created before she started concentrating on the visual arts. Part of her tile collection can be seen in the Helene Kröller-Müller room in the Tile Museum. This is possible thanks to a long-term loan from the Kröller-Müller Museum.

OVER HET LIMBURGS MUSEUM

Het Limburgs Museum is het museum voor cultuur en geschiedenis in Limburg. Het museum verzamelt, toont en vertelt verhalen van Limburg. We bieden verrassende perspectieven op het verleden, heden en toekomst van Limburg en van de wereld om ons heen.

Limburg is een bijzondere provincie. Hier vestigden zich de eerste mensen en later de eerste boeren. Hier kwamen de Romeinen ons land binnen, hier leefden de eerste christenen en ontstonden de eerste steden. Naast deze rijke geschiedenis laat het museum het Limburg van vandaag zien.

Door de tentoonstellingen van het Limburgs Museum zijn allerlei interactieve onderdelen voor kinderen toegevoegd en is een leuke speurtocht beschikbaar. Een heerlijk dagje uit voor het hele gezin!

WISSELTENTOONSTELLINGEN

In de poëtische en theatrale tentoonstelling Machtige Maas (t/m 29 augustus 2021) beleef je vier gezichten van de rivier. Zo ervaar je de Maas als muze, als inspiratiebron voor bijvoorbeeld landschapsschilders. Je ziet ook de Maas als monster, als regenrivier van 130 Limburgse kilometers die hele steden en dorpen kan overstromen. Je leert de Maas kennen als moordenaar, als een door de industrie vervuilde stroom water, vol gif en plastic. En natuurlijk voel je de Maas als moeder.
Van Daar & Van Hier (t/m 5 september 2021) laat zien dat de dekolonisatie van Nederlands-Indië het leven van jonge Limburgers vandaag nog steeds beïnvloedt. 25 Limburgse jongeren gingen op zoek naar hun Indische of Molukse wortels. Ze doken in archieven, deden stamboomonderzoek en interviewden hun (groot)ouders. In de tentoonstelling vertellen ze wat ze ontdekten over hun  familiegeschiedenis en gaan ze het gesprek aan over een verzwegen verleden.
Vanaf 3 oktober 2021 is de unieke tentoonstelling De vergeten prinsessen van Thorn te bezoeken. De tentoonstelling volgt het leven van een aantal van de prinsessen die ooit verbonden waren aan het damesstift in Thorn. Zo krijg je een unieke inkijk in het leven van de Europese adel in de achttiende eeuw. Een leven met een voor die tijd grote vrijheid en vol pracht en praal, maar ook een leven in een gouden kooi. Voor deze tentoonstelling geldt een toeslag die niet bij deze actie inbegrepen is.

De vergeten prinsessen van Thorn is te bezoeken van 3 oktober 2021 t/m 3 april 2022 met een toeslag van 5,00 per ticket.

Kijk om je heen

Gebouwen: we zien ze overal wel. Of je nou in een stad woont of een dorp. Een wandeling door een dunbevolkt plaatsje of over de drukke wegen van de randstad. We ontkomen er gewoon niet aan. Het hoort al eeuwen in het straatbeeld. Toch is het zo normaal geworden dat we er soms niet goed genoeg naar kijken. Over het ontwerpen en ontwikkelen van een gebouw wordt echter goed nagedacht. Er wordt ontzettend veel energie ingestopt die we vaak maar voor lief nemen.

Als het aan het centrum voor architectuur en stedenbouw van Haarlem en de regio Kennemerland, oftewel het ABC Architectuurcentrum, ligt, moet hier verandering in komen. Verschillende exposities en activiteiten voor jong en oud. Dit allemaal om de passie voor de bebouwde omgeving met het volk te delen. En op deze manier je iets bewuster te maken van de architectuur om ons heen.

Leer meer over gebouwen

Met architectuur wordt echter niet alleen het bouwen van een gebouw bedoeld. Er komt veel meer bij kijken dan dat! Van interieurarchitectuur tot stedenbouw, maar ook ruimtelijke ordening, en tuin- en landschapsarchitectuur zijn belangrijke onderdelen binnen architectuur en stedenbouw. Het is een eigen kunstvorm.

Het centrum is opgericht in 1989 met de instelling om iedereen die in deze sector werkt te informeren over huidige plannen en toekomstige projecten en activiteiten in en rondom Haarlem. Tegenwoordig is de doelgroep van het ABC Architectuurcentrum een stuk groter. Vandaag de dag hopen ze juist iedereen te interesseren in de architectuur om ons heen.

Aan de hand van exposities, lezingen, symposia, discussies, workshops en ook kinderpartijtjes probeert het centrum interesse voor deze sector te wekken. William Kentridge –  10 Drawings for Projection

William Kentridge (Johannesburg, 1955) studeerde politicologie en African Studies. Kentridge staat bekend om zijn bijzondere animatiefilms, houtskooltekeningen en installaties opgebouwd uit film, geluid, muziek en sculpturale objecten. In 2015 schonk de kunstenaar 10 Drawings for Projection (1989-2011) aan het Eye filmmuseum. Deze tien korte animatiefilms zorgden voor zijn internationale doorbraak. De films tonen de bewogen geschiedenis van Zuid-Afrika. Ze geven een wijde blik op het oeuvre van Kentridge en een kijkje in het leven in Zuid-Afrika na de afschaffing van de apartheid.

Door de ogen van… Stephanie Afrifa

Stephanie is kunstkenner en curator en laat haar licht schijnen op de tentoonstelling 10 Drawings for Projection. De werken zijn educatief en maken je nieuwsgierig. De teksten gecombineerd met het beeld geven realistisch weer wat zich in Zuid-Afrika afspeelde tijdens de apartheid. Het is zwaar en intens maar wel de realiteit. De werken dagen de bezoeker uit om de geschiedenis in te duiken en meer te ontdekken door te gaan lezen of bekijken over het onderwerp.

In eerste instantie had Stephanie Afrifa een vijandelijke houding richting de tentoonstelling. Een witte man die kunst maakte over Zuid-Afrika. Echter bij het zien van de tentoonstelling begreep Stephanie de gedachten achter de werken. Kentridge gaat de dialoog over de situatie met zichzelf aan.

Gekozen kunstwerk

Het werk dat Stephanie Afrifa zou toevoegen aan de tentoonstelling is van David Koloane genaamd Mongrel in the City (2016). In zijn werk komt het landschap van Johannesburg naar voren. De getekende hond staat symbool voor de politieke spanningen en de indringers in Johannesburg.

At the end of January 2019, Centraal Museum purchased a work by the Utrecht painter Joachim Wtewael at an auction of Sotheby’s New York: The Banquet of the Gods. The small-sized copper work (15.5 x 20.5 centimeters) and dating between 1601 and 1603 had long been on the museum’s wish list. As early as 1933, Centraal Museum established that it was the greatest wish to have this work by Wtewael in their collection. And now the time has finally come: with financial support from the Rembrandt Association, the Mondriaan Fund, the National Purchasing Fund of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and a number of private individuals, a long-cherished wish has become reality.

Love and Lust

The protagonists of The Gods Banquet are the love couple Venus and Mars. They are depicted arm in arm in the foreground with next to them the son of Venus: Cupid. A festive banquet takes place around them where about fifty gods let themselves go as partygoers. Singing, drinking and dancing take place in a magical forest.

Mars and Venus seem to be Wtewael’s favorite pair of gods. The painter also referred to the relationship between the goddess of love and the god of war in other works. Wtewael made at least four works of art between 1600 and 1611 in which he shows the adultery between the two gods. The theme of ‘love and lust’ is also frequently used in his other works. This theme is reflected in the painter’s use of color. The red colors in his work are usually not just chosen, they indicate the god Mars. Red is the color of danger, but also of love and lust.

Mannerism

Joachim Wtewael (1566-1638) is seen as the most important person in Dutch Mannerism. This is a style in which painters tried to match the work of famous Renaissance predecessors, such as Rafaël and Michelangelo. One of the characteristics in mannerist works is the exaggerated muscular bodies with crazy twists and unrealistic body proportions. These cannot be missed in the works of Wtewael!

The premiere is for Rembrandt Association: The Banquet of the Gods will first be shown at TEFAF Maastricht 2019 (16 to 24 March 2019). From April 2019 the work can be admired in Centraal Museum in Utrecht. Be enchanted by the detailed and colorful mythological scene and discover all the gods with all their mutual relationships.
