Between March 23 and June 24, 2018, the Van Gogh Museum opens its doors to the Van Gogh & Japan exhibition. Discover how Van Gogh set the Japanese example to his control in this exhibition.
Van Gogh himself has never been to Japan. He became fascinated by Japan during his stay in Paris. At the time, Japanese prints were very popular and Van Gogh also started to collect Japanese printmaking. He got to know the country on the basis of the prints.
Van Gogh used Japanese prints to give his own work a new direction. He was inspired by the exotic performances, unusual compositions and bright color areas. He therefore also began to copy the works. This gave him a better feeling for the direction of his own art. In this way he modernized his art.
