Paleis Het Loo

In Paleis Het Loo you can discover the world of the Oranges during the past centuries. The former royal palace Het Loo Palace currently serves the purpose of a national museum. Het Loo Palace is a combination of the palace itself, the gardens, and a museum. This way it displays the House of Orange-Nassau and its residential culture in an engaging way. Het Loo Palace is designed by Jacob Roman.

The collection of Het Loo Palace has an own collection as well as loaned pieces. The collection consists of about 160.000 objects and is divided into various subcollections, such as paintings, sculptures, furniture, crafts, fabric, costumes, drawings, prints and pictures, orders and awards, books, and vehicles. Furthermore, Het Loo Palace owns part of the National Plantcollection.

History of Het Loo Palace

In 1684, stadtholder William III bought the medieval castle ‘The Old Loo’ to build a new hunting lodge next to it. This lodge was primarily used as a country house for his wife Mary II Stuart. After William III became King of England, he extended the palace. Four pavilions were built which connected the centerpart to the East and West wings. In 1807, Louis Napoléon Bonaparte radically changed the exterior of the building. The palace became grey-white in colour, and he covered the 17th century French formal garden with an English landscape garden in romantic style. With king William I, the Oranges returned to Het Loo Palace. Queen Wilhelmina extended the palace in 1911 with an extra floor and several extra buildings. In 1970 it was decided to make the palace into a museum. This major resoration started in 1977.
