Markiezenhof

The rulers of the Markiezenhof

The Markiezenhof in Bergen op Zoom has had many rulers. In the middle of the fifteenth century, two dukes, Jan II and Jan III, had the existing medieval courtyard extended to the large Markiezenhof. A real marquis came to live there in 1533, when the son of Jan III was given this title by the emperor. Many marquises followed, each leaving their own mark by adding new buildings or renovating old ones. In 1795, the Marquisate came to an end because the French added the Netherlands to theirRepublic.

The marquises may not have survived, but the building itself did. Today, it serves as a platform for various art exhibitions as well as for a permanent collection. Enjoy the art and wander through the building’s many spaces!

The mission of MuseumTV is to introduce art and culture to the biggest audience possible. We do this on our joint video on demand platform for Dutch museums. Through our partners we bring the platform to the attention of the Dutch public actively.
